Honey Fungus
Honey Fungus a parasite that can effect tree stumps and trunks, compost heaps and under dead plant matter or mulch. It is very common in woods and forests and is one of nature's ways of decomposing dead wood.
Honey fungus can be identified by removing the outer bark from the affected trunk at ground level. If creamy white fungal growth is seen and there is a strong smell of mushrooms then it is almost certainly present.
To prevent recurrence of the fungus, it is important to remove all dead or dying trees, shrubs and other woody plants and their root systems and not to use any of the resulting chippings as compost or mulch.
